"Peer Gynt" by Ibsen

2024 · Vilnius Academy of Arts; model developed for the stage of the National Drama Theatre in Vilnius

This project was created at the Vilnius Academy of Arts as a final bachelor’s degree project. Grieg’s music was the starting point that led me to choose Henrik Ibsen’s work. I wanted to explore different visual impulses for conveying the depth of the imagery and the atmosphere of Peer Gynt, a play inspired by Norwegian mythology and folklore.

I used a range of puppet elements, stylized costumes, and exaggerated scenography to build a world shaped by fantasy and transformation. The scenography incorporates elements of Braille, which I developed as a way to express the inner blindness of the main character, Peer Gynt, and his path towards self-knowledge.

For the stage of the National Drama Theatre in Vilnius, I created four model transformations at a scale of 1:50. I also designed a costume for Peer Gynt from fluorescent fabric, which gives the character a distinctive presence. Solveig’s cane puppet and the Troll masks help evoke a world inhabited by fantastic creatures and magic.

Alongside these elements, I developed additional costumes and character studies for the play, including another sketch of the Åse puppet for the scene with death.
